About

My name is Maryam Tanveer, and I am an MPH student studying Epidemiology on the Maternal-Child Health track at the University of Washington. I also hold a BSPH in Public Health and a BS in Cell and Molecular Biology with a certificate in Gender-Based Violence from Tulane University. My main research interest is understanding injury and violence, specifically gun violence and sexual violence. I first became interested in public health because it perfectly connected my background in the hard sciences with my interests in understanding systems and people. My specific interest in violence prevention came from my experience as a sexual violence victim advocate during my undergraduate studies. This role emphasized to me the widespread need to evaluate and create solutions for social issues like violence and demonstrated how public health can be an effective means to achieve these goals.
