Find a TA Position
Teaching assistantships (TAs) are appointed for specific courses by course instructors and paid directly through the UW. Priority for TA positions in the Department of Epidemiology is typically given to doctoral students in their second year and beyond.
Several of the larger, required epi methods courses, as well as some of the undergraduate epi courses, hire teaching assistants (TA) every year. All open-hire opportunities for TA positions in the department are broadcast to students on a quarterly basis, and will also be posted here as they become available. Having performed well in the course, or having specialized skills or knowledge applicable to the course content, can be important factors in the hiring process.

Pay rates for TAs are determined by the Academic Student Employee (ASE) Union contract with the UW. Specific salary for an offered position will be stated in the offer letter.
All UW Academic Student Employee (ASE) RA and TA positions provide a standard salary based on student level. Thus, a 50% FTE (i.e., 20 hours/week) RA or TA position for:
- A student in the MS or MPH program provides a salary of $2664/month.
- A student in the PhD program who has not yet passed the General Exam provides a salary of $2863/month.
- A student in the PhD program who has passed the General Exam provides a salary of $3076/month.
In addition, a 50% FTE RA or TA position provides excellent health coverage – medical, dental, and vision care – through the Graduate Appointee Insurance Program (GAIP).
Finally, a student who is supported by a 50% FTE RA or TA position does not pay any tuition and only a small amount in fees each quarter.
RA and TA appointments at less than 50% FTE (usually these are 25% FTE, or 10 hours/week) only pay a salary and do not include tuition coverage or health insurance.
