Hiwot is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Epidemiology and a NIH Predoctoral fellow in the 'Contributing Factors and Consequences of Cancer Health Disparities' training program. She was previously an NIH Predoctoral trainee in the 'TL1 Translational Research' and the 'Biostatistics, Epidemiologic and Bioinformatic Training in Environmental Health' (BEBTEH) training programs. Hiwot is actively involved in scientific efforts alongside multi-country and multi-sectoral teams that explore neighborhood determinants of noncommunicable diseases and their risk factors globally. Her research interests include developing methodologies to measure neighborhoods as complex exposures, particularly in Global South settings, to improve epidemiologic research and promote health-centric urban planning policies in rapidly developing regions. Hiwot received her M.S. in Global Health (Certificate: Geospatial Analysis) from Duke University, and her B.S in Cell and Molecular Biology and B.A in Psychology from the University of South Florida.
