Meet Tina Monroe: Supporting Faculty Affairs in Epidemiology
Tina Monroe is the latest addition to the Department of Epidemiology, where she leads academic HR efforts with a focus on efficiency, inclusivity, and collaboration. With a career spanning more than 15 years in healthcare, finance, and academia, Tina brings a wealth of expertise to her role. Her background includes serving as a Human Resources Associate at the National Alzheimer’s Coordinating Center (NACC), a Senior Human Resources Generalist at Dharma Healthcare Management, and holding HR leadership positions at Fisher Communications and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Seattle.
At the University of Washington’s Department of Epidemiology (UW Epi), Tina offers a fresh perspective on supporting faculty and advancing the department’s mission. She views her role as a combination of support and service, aiming to streamline what can often be complex or opaque processes. “I have always viewed my role in Human Resources as one of support and service,” she shared. Her ability to manage people and processes in diverse environments, paired with her passion for fostering positive workplace cultures, makes her an invaluable addition to the team.
Tina is also deeply committed to creating inclusive environments where everyone feels valued and appreciated. She sees her role in Academic HR as an opportunity to advocate for faculty and staff, ensuring their voices are heard and their contributions recognized.
What Faculty Need to Know
As Academic HR Manager, Tina oversees critical processes like faculty appointments, promotions, reappointments, and sabbaticals. Additionally, she provides administrative support to the Chair and coordinates faculty meetings and activities for the department’s Leadership Team.
Some of the most common questions Tina receives from faculty are about faculty appointments—such as how to request or sponsor them, the steps involved in the appointment process, drafting letters of support, and formatting CVs.
One key lesson Tina has already highlighted is the importance of timing. “The timing of processes is crucial, particularly when it comes to the academic calendar,” she noted. Whether it’s faculty voting, reappointments, promotions, sabbaticals, or other HR-related tasks, understanding time-sensitive deadlines is essential to her work in successfully navigating faculty-related HR tasks. There are specific deadlines that have to be met in order to complete those processes. While these processes can be opaque, faculty are encouraged to reach out early and often to work as collaborators on HR processes. Tina’s goals are twofold—ensuring her colleagues feel supported while staying well-versed in policies and procedures to provide thoughtful, informed guidance.
You can find Tina stationed in Room 861A of the HRC building on Mondays and Wednesdays.
