Congratulations to our 2026 Husky 100 honorees, Marin Strong and Miguel Paredes! The Husky 100 recognizes 100 UW undergraduate and graduate students who are making the most of their time at the UW. We are proud to celebrate two outstanding people at Epi who embody the department’s commitment to research, education, and service in the pursuit of health equity.

Marin’s work spans from King County to Kenya, where she has applied epidemiological methods to real-world challenges. From interviewing programs delivering medication for opioid use disorder to supporting research that helps pregnant women prevent HIV and STI infections. Beyond the field, she has brought that same commitment to the halls of power, engaging with policymakers in Olympia and on the international stage at the United Nations. Her dedication to connecting classroom theory with community realities, and using research as a tool for advocacy, reflects the very spirit of what we strive to do at UW Epi.

Miguel’s research has shed light on how infectious diseases like mpox and SARS-CoV-2 exploit social inequities to disproportionately impact marginalized communitie. As an aspiring physician-scientist, he brings both scientific rigor and compassionate clinical care to that mission, tackling not just the biological dimensions of disease but the social barriers that stand in the way of equitable health. His vision of community-informed, community-centered research is a model for the next generation of epidemiologists.

Together, Marin and Miguel remind us why this work matters. We can’t wait to see the impact they’ll continue to make.
