Associate Professor, Epidemiology

Department of Epidemiology Associate Professor, Stephen Hawes, conducted a workshop entitled “From theory to practice: Statistical analysis and presentation of results in clinical research” for health sciences students and professionals at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru. This workshop was part of a graduate certificate program directed by Dr. Fredy Canchihuaman, a former University of Washington PhD student (Epidemiology, 2011). Over 40 attendees participated in the 2-day workshop, which covered epidemiologic study design, methods to assess confounding and effect modification, statistical programming and analyses in Stata, and the writing of study tables and results.

A highlight of the trip for Dr. Hawes was a reunion dinner with a number of former UW students who he has mentored over the years, including Drs. Kristen Heitzinger (PhD Epidemiology, 2015), Fredy Canchihuaman (PhD Epidemiology, 2011), Magaly Blas (MPH Epidemiology 2007, PhD Epidemiology 2008) and Manuel Villaran (MPH Epidemiology, 2013), as well as colleague Dr. Silvia Montano (MPH Epidemiology, 2002).
