The Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center (HIPRC) is a worldwide leader in injury cause and prevention research. Founded in 1985, HIPRC is a multidisciplinary research center supported by the University of Washington School of Medicine and Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.  HIPRC faculty and staff are devoted to conducting research, education, and community outreach aimed at diminishing the personal impact of trauma and broadening the effectiveness of injury prevention and treatment programs regionally and nationally.  HIPRC supports 18 core faculty from multiple health sciences and academic divisions, graduate level and post-doctoral trainees, as well as support and research staff.

HIPRC seeks Temporary Program Operations Specialists (5 positions) to support the HIPRC INSIGHT summer education program for high school students.  This is a temporary 100% position for the period 6/13/2022 – 7/29/2022.  The purpose of this position is the management of the Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center (HIPRC) INSIGHT summer program for high school students.   This position reports to the HIPRC Program Manager and works closely with the Training & Education Program Specialist and INSIGHT Program Lead. The HIPRC administratively sits within the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine in the UW School of Medicine and is a multi-disciplinary specialty center located at Harborview Medical Center Campus.  This position will work remote/online.

HIPRC’s Injury Prevention Student Internship Training Program (INSIGHT) is an innovative, interdisciplinary and intensive summer program for high school, undergraduate and graduate students. The 4-week high school component of INSIGHT introduces students to medical and public health campaign design and delivery.  All students participate remote/online in injury research talks and professional development seminars.  The program culminates in a presentation at a research symposium at the end of the program. The Program Specialist will support the high school component of the INSIGHT program under the general direction of the Training & Education Program Specialist and INSIGHT Program Lead.  They will work closely with the Program Lead to assist and organize seminars and coordinate the informal peer mentoring between the undergraduate/graduate program and the high school program.

The individual in this position helps support the activities of HIPRC’s 4-week high school summer program.  The program will offer 2 four-week sessions to high school students.  The individual in this position must be a good time manager and comfortable with a range of projects and operational tasks.  This position requires the incumbent to have an understanding of public health education principles and experience working with youth in an educational, counseling or other leadership role.  The individual in this position must be able to work as part of a team and act maturely and professionally.  This individual must quickly gain the trust and respect of the program participants, and must communicate clearly and effectively with program participants, UW faculty and staff.

The major aspects of this position fall into the following categories:

• Instruct and supervise high school interns (75%)
• Administrative duties related to INSIGHT program (15%)
• Serve as liaison to faculty mentors working with INSIGHT program (10%)

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instruct and supervise high school interns (75%)

• Develop and adapt as needed a practice-based learning curriculum based on the fundamentals of public health communications and outreach.
• Lead students through the coursework and curriculum throughout a four-week onsite internship aimed at developing a public health awareness campaign.
• Supervise high school student interns and communicate daily to assess research project and curriculum progress, adapting as needed.
• Foster a culture of collaboration and shared learning
Administrative duties related to INSIGHT program (15%)
• Develop detailed calendar of program events; disseminate calendar to program participants, faculty mentors, and speakers.
• Collaborate with HIPRC communications team to develop and/or edit visually appealing electronic and print promotional material, publications, and articles (brochures, newsletters, posters, online newsletters) for the student curriculum, activities and learning objectives, and to publicize the program to the UW community and the community at large;
• Anticipate and arrange for workspace for interns, including use of conference rooms, computer rooms and UW campus areas.
• Assist with onboarding and orientation of all student interns
• Assist INSIGHT Program Lead with planning and organization of final research symposium.  Duties include but not limited to:
• Drafting schedule of events
• Preparing symposium program brochure
• Designing and sending invitations to mentors and sponsors
• Managing logistical details
• Advertising for event, presentations
• Recruiting judges to review academic posters
• Work on special projects or additional duties as required by the HIPRC Director.

Serve as liaison to faculty mentors working with INSIGHT program (10%)

• Actively communicate with faculty mentors, staff and outside speakers regarding scheduled seminars and lectures specific to the high school program.
• Meet regularly with HIPRC leaders to discuss program curriculum, student progress, research projects, and program status.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in healthcare management, business, social science programs, education or other related
• Type and Years of Experience: Minimum 1-2 years’ experience managing programs involving student learners; curriculum development; or educational programs OR equivalent education/experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
