Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine: Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center (HIPRC) seeks a Research Consultant to work with the recently established Firearm Injury & Policy Research Program (FIPRP). Investigators are actively involved in examining causes and consequences of firearm violence and injury, and evaluating the implementation and effectiveness of public policy for firearm violence and injury prevention.
Research projects will include:
• Interventions to improve safe storage of firearms;
• Interventions to prevent firearm injury and crime recidivism;
• Observational studies on the relationship of firearm ownership and risk of death due to homicide or suicide;
• Risk factors for firearm injury/death among children, adolescents, adults, the mentally ill, and individuals with dementia;
• Effect of laws and public policy changes on firearm injuries and deaths.
This Research Consultant will work closely with the PI as well as the FIPRP investigators and Research Scientist at HIPRC on all projects. The Research Consultant is primarily responsible for:
• Reviewing, analyzing and conducting advanced data analysis for research projects = 60%
• Provide methodologic expertise on study design and data collection for research grant proposals and other firearm research projects in the areas of firearm research described above = 30%
• Provide quality control on data collection methods, implementation = 10%
This position reports to HIPRC Director, Monica Vavilala, MD, with additional supervision provided by FIPRP director. The position works under limited supervision and must demonstrate an ability to work independently with sound judgment. Must also be an excellent collaborator be able to work effectively as a member of a team under technical guidance of supervisor.
The research consultant position is the primary individual responsible for developing, providing oversight of collection, review and analysis of the firearms data in the Firearm Injury & Policy Research Program. This individual must have strong analytic skills and by providing data that leads toward sound policy development. This is a highly visible research program, funded, in part, by the State as well as other entities. This individual must have a strong analytical foundation and technical skills, strong interest in this area of research and the ability to turn data into useful information. This individual will be working quite independently, but must mesh development of data methodology with other aspects of the research being conducted.
The University of Washington’s Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center (HIPRC) is a nationally recognized leader in the field of injury and injury prevention research, education, training and community outreach. HIPRC is jointly supported by the UW School of Medicine and Harborview Medical Center. HIPRC’s multi-disciplinary membership includes faculty members from the UW Schools of Medicine, Public Health, Social Work, Nursing, Engineering, Pharmacy, and Law. Our faculty and staff are devoted to conducting research, education, and prevention programs aimed at diminishing the personal impact of trauma, and broadening the effectiveness of injury prevention and treatment programs regionally and nationally

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Details Of Major Job Duty & percentage of time: Reviewing, analyzing and conducting advanced data analysis for research projects = 60%
• Plan and implement data intake processes and systems, per needs of individual research projects;
• Conduct data review;
• Provide analysis of data for firearm research projects (as described above) led by the FIPRP investigators.
• Prepare data for presentations in various forms and for publication;
Details Of Major Job Duty & percentage of time: Provide methodologic expertise on study design and data collection for research grant proposals and other firearm research projects in the areas of firearm research = 30%
• Contribute to the design, implementation, and maintenance of the information infrastructure within HIPRC in support of research projects on the topic of firearm violence and injury prevention and control.
• Provide methodologic expertise on study design and data collection for firearm research projects topics as described above.
• Contribute to the creation of sophisticated and inter-related instruments and surveys for the purpose of conducting firearm research and evaluation of public policy

• Oversee data collection and management;
• Oversee data retrieval systems;
• Verify data for publications and presentations;
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• BA in math, statistics, quantitative health or social sciences, or other relevant field
• Minimum of 3 years’ of increasingly responsible and relevant experience in study design, and research data management and analysis; preferably in firearm violence or other injury control research.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS :
• Experience in instrument and survey design and development.
• Solid understanding of empirical research including quantitative and qualitative analytical research skills.
• Ability to think flexibly about the use of analytic methods and demonstrated openness to working on research projects that integrate qualitative and quantitative research methods.
• Demonstrated ability to provide inferential statistics by applying advanced analytic skills to a variety of research projects.
• Proficiency with relational database, data linkage, and statistical software including one (and preferably several) of following packages: REDCap, SQL, LinkPlus, LinkKing, LinkSolv, Stata, R, SPSS, SAS, ArcGIS, Microsoft Access, NVivo, and Atlas.ti.
• Collaborative orientation, flexibility, and the ability to be proactive in decision-making and carrying out work.
• Strong organizational abilities, problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS :
• MA or PhD highly desired in epidemiology or other relevant field
• 4 or more years in research data analysis
• Expertise in deterministic and probabilistic linkages of large databases.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Comfortable with juggling demands of a busy, frequently changing plan of work in a professional manner, while exhibiting sound judgment about priorities and work scope.
• Commitment to the injury control mission of HIPRC.
